About Dr. Shirin Shafazand:

Doctor Shirin Shafazand is a board-certified pulmonary, critical care, and sleep specialist with a Master’s degree in Health Services Research and a strong commitment to patient-centered research. She graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1995, then did her residency in internal medicine in 1998(also at University of Toronto). Afterwards she did two fellowships at Standford University Hospital...pulmonary disease fellowship in 2001 and sleep disorders fellowship in 2002. Her areas of expertise include pulmonary hypertension, sleep medicine, chronic lung disease and lung transplantation. Her research has been funded by various organizations, and she has served as the Principal Investigator or Co-PI on several studies related to sleep disorders, including studies on sleep disorders in Hispanic patients, patients with Parkinson's Disease, and patients with spinal cord injury. She has also received a grant from the Department of Defense to study sleep apnea in patients with SCI. Dr. Shafazand teaches health policy, epidemiology, and population health to MD/MPH students and serves as the Director of the University of Miami MD/MPH program. She has published many papers and book chapters and serves as an Associate Editor for several key journals in her specialty areas. Additionally, she has chaired several committees at ATS and is involved in medical education at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. She speaks English and Farsi.
